Marks and Spencer
With one of the most instantly recognized household trade marks (St Michael),
Marks and Spencer UK is one of the most well known High Street stores.
Starting as a small market stall in Leeds this British company is a global concern
- whilst most stores are based in the UK they also have stores in a further
twenty-five country's worldwide. Annual turnover is around £7 billion
with Marks and Spencer remaining one of the most well known British retailers
it retains a proud heritage built on the five principle values of innovation,
quality, service, trust and value.
The English company Marks and Spencer UK started off in the North when
Michael Marks (a successful stall holder in Leeds) moved to Manchester and met
cashier Tom Spencer - their business partnership bore the first Marks and Spencer
store. By the early 1900's this partnership had developed a head office and large
warehouse in Manchester and further store openings in the North of England. In
the 1930's the first Marks and Spencer UK stores opened up in Southern
England - marked by their flagship store opening at London's Marble Arch. In this
era Marks and Spencer also developed in-store cafes and food departments but it
wasn't until the early 1970's that they expanded their stock to include Marks
and Spencer UK wine. At the same time Marks and Spencer began to venture into
Asian food offering a variety of Chinese and Indian dishes. In the 1970's Marks
and Spencer stores were located in most of the UK's main high streets, but the
mid 1980's marked the opening of their first 'edge-of-town' store. It was also
at this time that they further extended their product line to include home furniture
& furnishings as well as financial services (including the Marks and Spencer
UK store card) both of which have proved extremely popular expansions. The
end of the 20th century saw the launch of Marks and Spencer - their Internet home
shopping site and the new century marked the introduction of designer collections
(such as Autograph). Most recent developments at Marks and Spencer include
their Simply Food store openings - smaller local stores that sell only food produce.
